Practical Tips for Mindfulness

Let’s delve deeper into the practical dimensions of mindfulness. In the book of Ecclesiastes, the author extolled mindfulness as a remedy for the challenges and apparent futility of life.

Much like the author of Ecclesiastes, you might find yourself grappling with the seeming meaninglessness of life, resonating with his proclamation, "Everything is meaningless," as the Teacher declared, "completely meaningless!" (Ecclesiastes 1:2 NLT). Despite hard work, things may feel cyclical, and accomplishments may appear elusive (Ecclesiastes 1:3-11).

Acknowledging the broken, tragic, and sometimes senseless nature of the world, Solomon's response to this predicament is an encouragement to enjoy life as bestowed by God, advocating mindfulness and living in the moment (Ecclesiastes 3:13, 22). "People should eat and drink and enjoy the fruits of their labor, for these are gifts from God… So I saw that there is nothing better for people than to be happy in their work. That is our lot in life." (NLT)

Here are practical suggestions for cultivating a mindfulness habit:

1.     Take a Sensory Walk: Whether in a nature park or around the block, release frenetic thoughts and engage your five senses. Notice the scent of clover, the buzzing of a bee, or the passing train. Observe colors, shapes, and textures. Explore taste with wild berries or edible plants. Feel the sensations – toes in shoes, a soft jacket on your arms, or the rough bark of a tree. Nature fosters awareness of the present moment, silencing distracting thoughts and allowing focus on God's created beauty (Psalm 19:1).

2.     Two Minutes of Silence: Eliminate distractions like music and digital devices. Focus on your senses, appreciating the beauty of the moment. Become attuned to Jesus' presence with you.

3.     Gradual Extension: Progress from two to five, then ten, and eventually twenty minutes of mindfulness. Can you spend a full twenty minutes immersed in your senses? Sense the presence and love of Jesus. Journal your experiences or express them through poetry and art as you wait on God.

Through these practices, you'll enhance your ability to relish the precious gifts bestowed by God. Amid life's frustrations, you'll discover a profound sense of peace.
